Did you know that over 60 million American suffer from asthma or allergies? That’s a huge percentage of the population! May is National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month. At Infinite CBD, we’d like to talk to you about using CBD for asthma and allergies.
What is National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month?
During the month of May, there are many organizations that seek to highlight and educate the public about asthma and allergies. For your own knowledge, here are a few things you should know about asthma and allergies.
It’s estimated that 26 million Americans have asthma. Asthma affects both children and adults.
Roughly 50 million Americans suffer from some type of allergy. Common allergies include those to food, pollen, and even chemicals in the products we purchase.
Both of these conditions require education because every year millions of people die from an asthma attack or an allergic reaction. It’s important to be informed concerning asthma and allergies, especially if you have or are often around children.
Using CBD for Asthma
Asthma is a condition where when exposed to antigens or a lack of oxygen, the lungs begin to have spasms. This can lead to trouble breathing.
There are a variety of asthma treatments. Oftentimes, those with severe asthma will take daily medication and use an inhaler as needed. There are many environmental and lifestyle changes that those with asthma can also adapt to decrease their chances of experiencing an asthma attack.
A study published by the University of Florence suggests that CBD might be able to help those with asthma. More specifically, when cannabinoid receptors in animals subjects are activated, asthma-like reactions are reduced when the animals are exposed to antigens. This suggests that engaging cannabinoid receptors, with CBD, could help to calm the lung’s inflammatory response.
Recently, another study evaluated the connection between CBD and cytokine levels. Cytokine is an inflammatory agent, and the results of this research suggest that CBD should be further examined for its potential in alleviating and reduce asthma symptoms.
Using CBD for Allergies
When those with allergies encounter an antigen, their immune system has an over-active response. This response can result in sinus draining, a rash, itchiness, swelling, and even cause a swollen tongue or throat. Allergies are pretty common, so there are a variety of over-the-counter medications that those with allergies often take on a daily basis to alleviate their symptoms. Those with more severe allergies may carry an EpiPen in case they unknowingly come into contact with a serious allergin.
The endocannabinoid system plays a key role in modulating the immune system. This means, that consuming cannabinoids, especially ones that are anti-inflammatory, can have a positive effect on the way the immune system responds to antigens.
Studies have called cannabinoids “as novel as anti-inflammatory drugs.” Due to their ability to influence the immune system’s response to inflammation due to a variety of causes, CBD could help to reduce many common allergy symptoms.
Another study, conducted at the University of Bonn in Germany, found that the endocannabinoid system modulates the expression and cause of skin inflammation. Also known as contact dermatitis, this condition can flare up when the skin comes into contact with allergens.
Using CBD for Asthma and Allergies
Overall, the current research suggests that using CBD for asthma and allergies can be effective. Millions of people are managing asthma and allergies on a daily basis. Studies demonstrate that CBD may play a role in helping to manage these sometime dilapidating conditions.
As National Asthma and Allergy Month begins, take the time to continue learning about these conditions and the various treatments available.
